DESCRIPTION:Beach Streets Open Streets is set to take place in West Long Beach on Saturday\, May 10\, 2025\, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hosted by the City of Long Beach and presented by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro)\, Beach Streets embraces the active commuting lifestyle by opening the streets and transforming them into safe\, open areas for people to bike\, walk and explore their neighborhoods. This year’s event will uplift the City’s Westside Promise Initiative\, a 10-year community investment plan that aligns existing City efforts and leverages partnerships to address current and historic challenges facing West Long Beach. \nBeach Streets promotes sustainable transportation\, supports local businesses and allows its thousands of annual participants to get to know their neighbors in a comfortable\, family-oriented environment. By bringing together different roadway users\, Beach Streets also promotes commuting safety and supports the City’s climate goals by encouraging zero-emission transportation options. \nThis year’s event route will feature Willow Street and Santa Fe Avenue. Entertainment hubs along the route will feature live music\, a kid zone\, food trucks and more. \nWestside Promise is a multi-department effort led by the Long Beach Community Development Department and in collaboration with other City Departments\, including Public Works\, Economic Development\, Health and Human Services\, Library Services and Parks\, Recreation and Marine\, and with oversight from the City Manager’s Office. The initiative focuses on areas related to housing supply\, climate resiliency\, youth and young adults\, workforce and training\, tourism\, and capital improvements to City facilities like parks and health centers. In addition to neighborhood improvement\, the initiative is also targeting economic development such as small business assistance and workforce training. The goal is to bolster and leverage investment in West Long Beach through entrepreneurship\, grant funding and external partnerships.

DESCRIPTION:The Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra will present a FREE community concert at the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library. This free event is open to all ages. Ticket discounts and giveaway for a future Musica Angelica performance will be offered\, and the audience can participate in a Q&A after the performance. \nThe concert will include a captivating performance with Andrew Waid and Ashley Salinas on violas\, joined by Alison Luedecke on harpsichord\, performing Baroque masterpieces: Bach’s Suite no. 1 (Allemande\, Sarabande\, Gigue)\, Telemann’s Canonic Sonata no. 4 (Vivace\, Piacevole\, Presto)\, and Benda’s Sonata in C minor (Adagio\, Allegro\, Moderato). \nAndrew Waid\, a versatile violist from Tulsa\, Oklahoma\, earned his DMA from Boston University in 2015. He performs on modern and baroque instruments with ensembles like the Boston Chamber Orchestra and Grand Harmonie. Now in San Diego since 2015\, he teaches at the San Diego Youth Symphony’s Community Opus Project and SDSU’s Community Music School. \nTexas-born Ashley Salinas (DMA) earned her viola performance degrees at the University of North Texas under Susan Dubois and others. She performed with groups like the Dallas Bach Society and La Follia Austin Baroque\, appearing at Jestivals like Victoria Bach and Boston Early Music. Since 2016 in California\, she plays with Opera Neo and Musica Angelica\, where she’s Director of Operations\, and teaches at Long Beach schools. \nDr. Alison Luedecke\, a passionate organist with a DMA from Eastman School of Music\, excels as a soloist\, ensemble member with San Diego Baroque\, and orchestral player with Mainly Mozart. She’s performed globally\, including at Notre Dame\, and crafts engaging concert programs. As a church musician\, she directs choirs and oversees a new organ project at Church of the Nativity\, while teaching and enjoying quality time with family and friends.

DESCRIPTION:A Hand-Building Ceramic Tiles Workshop by Beth Bowman and Jordan Tracy\nArt for All is a series of free hands-on workshops at Compound that teach various artistic mediums and encourages new ways of making art that’s fun and engaging for the family. \nArt supplies are provided. No previous art-making experience necessary. \nAbout Bowman Ceramics: Located in the heart of Long Beach\, Bowman Ceramics is a handcrafted ceramics + workshop owned by artist Beth Bowman. A longtime floral designer\, Beth began working with ceramics to explore a new innovative medium and fell in love with the slow process of the wheel and clay. Her designs are gracefully functional clay-ware that reflects a minimal aesthetic. Every piece of our collection is hand-thrown in the natural element of her home studio – which makes every ceramic piece unique and one-of-a-kind. Since starting Bowman Ceramics we have started to host workshops and personal/group ceramic classes to share our passion and technique with our community. \nBeth Bowman and Jordan Tracy (Clay Day LBC) will lead a hand-building ceramics workshop where attendees will design clay tiles using various surface design techniques and colorful glazes. Clay Day LBC\, a non-profit city-wide mobile pottery studio\, will fire all ceramic works in kilns after the workshop. Pieces will be ready for pickup within 3-4 weeks at Compound. \nAbout Jordan Tracy and Clay Day LBC: Jordan Tracy is a visual artist and educator from Long Beach. She studied ceramics at Long Beach City and Cerritos College. She is the Founder\, Executive Director\, and Lead Teacher of Clay Day LBC. She loves the shock and awe of students seeing their finished and fired ceramic artwork for the first time. In 2019 Clay Day LBC began as a volunteer-led after-school ceramics program at Cubberley K-8 in LBUSD. That program has since grown into a city-wide mobile pottery studio that brings the art of clay to underserved students in PreK-8th grade classrooms. Clay Day LBC’s mission is to ensure Long Beach kids have free and equitable access to the joys of ceramics during their school day.
