Prioritizing Your Health: Breast Cancer Awareness & Early Detection
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when we come together to learn, support one another, and advocate for our health. Breast cancer affects women and families across the globe, and here at Long Beach Moms, we want to raise awareness and empower you with knowledge.
Breast cancer is a formidable adversary, and its impact reverberates not just through the lives of moms but the entire family. The emotional, physical, and psychological toll can be overwhelming, underscoring the urgency of early detection and proactive health measures. By prioritizing our health, we not only safeguard our own well-being but also provide our families with the assurance that we’re doing everything in our power to stay strong for them. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let’s unite as Long Beach Moms, embrace regular screenings, and lead by example, sending a powerful message that our health matters, and so do our loved ones.
Breast Self-Examinations: A Step Toward Early Detection
Breast self-examinations are also important and can be a complement to regular screenings. You have the power to take charge of your health with regular breast self-examinations. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Preparation
- Find a quiet, well-lit room.
- Stand in front of a mirror and inspect your breasts for any changes in size, shape, or skin texture.
Step 2: Inspection
- Raise your arms and check for any dimpling, puckering, or changes in the skin.
- Look for changes in the nipples, such as redness or discharge.
Step 3: Manual Examination
- Lie down on a bed with a pillow under your right shoulder.
- Use the pads of your left fingers to feel your right breast in small circular motions. Cover the entire breast from top to bottom and side to side.
Step 4: Repeat
- Switch to your left breast and repeat the process.
- Don’t forget to check your armpits for any unusual lumps or swelling.
Remember, if you notice any changes or lumps, don’t panic. Not all lumps are cancerous, but they should be checked by a healthcare professional.
The Importance of Regular Screenings
