What initially brought you and your family to Long Beach? Can you share a bit about your journey and what made you decide to settle down here?
After going through a divorce, I stumbled upon the beautiful city of Long Beach and instantly fell in love with it. At that time, I was working as a Postmates delivery cyclist, which sparked the idea of starting my own delivery service. Determined to make a difference and stand out, I began establishing my reputation in the community. It was during this journey that I had a significant encounter with Laurie Grey, the owner of Pie Bar, who challenged me to think about how I could be different. Inspired by this conversation, I decided to implement a unique approach where I would charge the customer directly, without taking any sales or commission from local businesses, allowing us all to thrive together.

But it didn’t stop there. I wanted to make a positive impact on the lives of those in need, so I came up with the idea of donating 20% of every sale to support struggling individuals and families, providing them with essentials such as food, clothing, and housing. Additionally, we extend our support to single parents by helping them with rent and groceries whenever possible.

Long Beach is known for its vibrant and diverse community. How has living in such a culturally rich environment influenced your family’s values and beliefs?
Living in Long Beach’s vibrant and diverse community has profoundly influenced my family’s values and beliefs. We prioritize family above all else, appreciating the support and family-friendly atmosphere that surrounds us. Long Beach’s sense of unity and service within the community has inspired us to actively engage in volunteer work and contribute to those around us.

June is celebrated as Gay Pride Month around the world. Could you tell us how your family embraces and celebrates this month in Long Beach? Are there any specific events or traditions you participate in?
During Pride Month, our family actively participates in the vibrant celebrations and supports the cause in Long Beach. One of the ways we show our support is by sponsoring the Long Beach Pride parade, standing in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. We firmly believe in the concept that love is love, recognizing and valuing every individual’s heart regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

As a father and a local leader, how do you promote inclusivity and acceptance within your family and the wider community of Long Beach? Are there any initiatives or projects you’re involved in that aim to create a more inclusive environment for all residents?
I am a commissioner for the city of Long Beach for economic development and on the board for the DLBA for safety. It is crucial we all get involved and help shape and mold our community with action, community service and uplift our voice in the good and bad.

Long Beach offers a variety of family-friendly activities and attractions. Can you share some of your favorite spots or events that you enjoy with your family? What makes these experiences special for you?
We really love Shoreline Village and The Pike, this is where my family has made special moments as a family. They have a wide range of fun and food.

In your professional life, how do you balance your responsibilities as a father and your role as a community leader? Are there any strategies or practices you’ve found helpful in maintaining a healthy work-life balance?
At times my schedule is chaotic and hectic. I take being a father seriously;  I fought for six years to have 50/50 custody and stand-up as a father. I know the struggles of being homeless for a year, being a single parent, having to rely on public transportation to get the kids to school. I know how to serve due to my adversities. Sometimes people just need a chance; I know I did. My community believed in me and we have been thriving for four years.

Long Beach is known for its strong sense of community. How do you and your family engage with the local community? Are there any specific organizations or causes that you actively support or participate in together?
One of our favorite projects is our partnership with Blair Cohn of Bixby Knolls Association and Luis Navarro and Brenda Rivera, owners of Lola’s Mexican Restaurant. Every Wednesday, we deliver 80 meals to the food pantry at Long Beach City College and CSULB. This directly meets the need for food insecurity for students and the community in need of a hot meal. This project has a huge part of my heart because I resonate with the struggle of making ends meet and if I can be a light to give hope and serve that’s more to me than anything.

How do you encourage your children to be actively involved in shaping and contributing to the Long Beach community? Are there any lessons or values you hope to instill in them through their experiences here?
My kids are an extension of me, they have uniforms and go to work with me. I teach them the values of hard work and taking care of the community. They have learned to be compassionate and serve our beautiful city. I couldn’t be more grateful for my trial. My kids get to see that no matter what we will thrive by helping others, never giving up and giving them core examples on how to lead with heart and compassion.
