The Precious Perspective: Edition#1: Registration Roadmap

Hello Fellow Long Beach Moms,

My name is Precious Young, and I am humbled to have recently joined as a resident of the Long Beach community.  I value and prioritize motherhood as the parent of three children, one of which lives with disabilities.

I am proud to have served in various executive leadership positions in education for over twenty years including as an Educational Advocate and certified Chief Business Official (CBO), and I am looking forward to being a part of your journey and you a part of mine.

Moms in Long Beach may be wondering…

How do I navigate my local public education institution?

Moms in Long Beach may be wondering, How do I navigate my local public education institution?  This time of year, it’s important to help moms access a quick, reader-friendly guide with quality resources and information detailing important timelines for public school registration for all ages.   Additionally,  you’ll also find some valuable motherly perspectives on parenting a student in the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD).

Long Beach Unified School District offers a variety of program options for students of all ages.  Everything’s done online!  LBUSD’s online platform is called ParentVUE.  The registration window is currently open as of January 8, 2025.   All new residents must register with their local school as a first step.

Maybe you’ve wondered if LBUSD has options like School of Choice.   Why, yes they do!  School of Choice is optional and requires more information, which can be found on the school district’s website. There’s not a brief explanation for the School of Choice program design but here’s a go at simplification.

Smallest Learners

There are fee-based, subsidized, and free programs.   Programs are offered through the Child Development Center(CDC), Transitional Kindergarten, and Half Day / Full Day Preschool.  The registration window is currently open and opportunities remain on-going.

Elementary Aged Learners

Students may submit a School of Choice (SOC) application online through their ParentVUE account beginning Monday, March 3, 2025 at 9:00 a.m. The School of Choice application deadline is Thursday, April 10, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. Parents may select up to ten (10) Elementary/K-8 School of Choice schools on one application.  New residents don’t forget students NEW to Long Beach Unified School District will need to complete enrollment at their school of residence.  School of Choice application status will be available on ParentVUE Thursday, May 1, 2025, after 5:00 p.m.

Middle School Aged Learners

At the middle school level families and students can decide on a low-stress focus for academics such as (Science- Technology- Engineering Arts- Mathematics) STEAM Program focus.

High School Age Learners

If you recall, I mentioned a variety of program offerings in LBUSD.  Well, high school puts this concept into practice.   To better understand the specific programs offered at the high school level please attend the open house for your program of interest.   You can access the information using the link provided below.

Long Beach Mom’s  Perspective

Moms Like Us!

#1- My daughter struggles to make friends.  The school was a learning experience both socially and personally.  Teachers are easily accessible if I have a concern or a question. Communication overall has been smooth with all staff. The curriculum offered is good. Both of my children have thrived while being in LBUSD, and I am very pleased.

#2- School safety and security was my priority in selecting a learning environment for my child.  Safety hasn’t been an issue so far and I appreciate that. My son is very happy with the school choice and the district.  An extraordinary highlight offered in LBUSD is the Long Beach Promise program which allows your student to take college courses as a high school student at no cost.

#3- You can’t go wrong with elementary schools.  While I am partial to the schools in the southwestern hemisphere of the city for the increased diversity options,  all community learning allows for social development for students.

#4- High School age is a critical stage of development and I feel that my daughter was safe to grow as a young woman while prioritizing her academics. The high school administration and staff must remain vigilant and aware of the campus climate.

In conclusion, moms if you’d like us to consider covering specific content topics we’d love to hear from you!

Marvel in Motherhood!

Sincerely,

Precious Young
