Family Fitness: Fun Ways to Stay Active Together in Long Beach

Finding time to move as a family can feel impossible. Between school runs, work, and endless errands, carving out exercise time often ends up at the bottom of the to-do list. But staying active doesn’t have to be a chore or expensive. In Long Beach, there are endless ways to get the whole family moving, laughing, and making memories without spending a dime.

The beach is an obvious favorite. Beyond building sandcastles, you and the kiddos can run along the shoreline, toss a frisbee, or play catch. The sand adds natural resistance, giving legs and core a workout while everyone has fun. You can even turn a beach day into a mini fitness session with jumping jacks, squats, or planks on the sand. Alamitos Beach, Junipero Beach, and Rosie’s Dog Beach are all perfect for family adventures.

If a stroll is more your pace, Long Beach has beautiful trails and parks for easy family walks. El Dorado Park is huge, with lakes, trails, and wide-open spaces where kids can run while parents sneak in some steps. Bluff Park offers stunning ocean views, and the Long Beach Shoreline Bike Path is perfect for walking or biking while spotting boats, wildlife, or street performers. Make it a game for the kids: scavenger hunts or step challenges keep little legs moving.

Local parks also double as outdoor gyms. While kids climb and swing, parents can join in or sneak in squats, lunges, or push-ups. Bixby Park and Scherer Park have open fields for soccer, tag, or catch. You can even create a “park circuit,” rotating through exercises so everyone gets a turn.

Long Beach also offers free family fitness events. Some Yoga in the Park is a relaxing way to stretch together, and as always, keep an eye on the City of Long Beach Parks, Recreation & Marine calendar to catch these opportunities.

Even daily chores can become active play. Yard work, household obstacle courses, or dog walks can all get everyone moving without feeling like exercise. A little creativity turns ordinary moments into chances to be active together.

The key is keeping it playful and consistent. Make movement feel like a game, celebrate small victories, and embrace flexibility: some days a beach sprint is perfect, other days a backyard dance party is enough.

Family fitness doesn’t have to be complicated or costly. Long Beach offers countless ways to move, laugh, and explore together. From chasing waves to climbing playgrounds or dancing in your living room, the goal is simple: have fun and make memories while staying active. So grab your sneakers, sunscreen, and a smile. It’s time to move together.
