Our Favorite Nature Spots for Kids in Long Beach

A mama’s guide to fresh air, open space, and letting kids just be kids

There’s something about getting your kids outside—really outside—that changes the entire tone of your day. The whining softens. The energy shifts. Screens are forgotten. And suddenly, they’re climbing, exploring, collecting sticks, asking questions, and breathing a little deeper… just like you are.

The beauty of living in Long Beach is that you don’t have to plan a big trip or spend money to make this happen. We have access to so many beautiful, nature-filled spaces that are completely free (or free to enter, with optional parking).

Here are some of our favorite nature spots in Long Beach where kids can explore, play, and connect with the outdoors without it costing you a thing.

🌿 El Dorado Nature Center

If you’re craving a true “escape into nature” without leaving the city, this is it.

Tucked away in the middle of Long Beach, this 100+ acre nature center feels like stepping into a completely different world. Think shaded dirt trails, wooden bridges, quiet lakes, and the kind of peaceful stillness that instantly calms everyone down.

Why kids love it:

  • Wide, easy trails perfect for little legs (and strollers!)
  • Ducks, turtles, and birds everywhere you look
  • Plenty of sticks, rocks, and “treasures” to collect along the way

Why moms love it:

  • It’s contained and safe: no overwhelming crowds or distractions
  • It encourages slow, intentional exploring (aka, no rushing)
  • It’s one of the few places where kids naturally unplug

💡 Tip: Parking has a small fee, but entry is free, and you can walk or bike in for free. (Visit Long Beach)

🌊 Shoreline Aquatic Park

For kids who love wide-open spaces and water views, this spot is magic.

Located right along the waterfront, this park blends nature with just enough city energy to keep things exciting. You get ocean breezes, grassy hills, and space for kids to run freely.

Why kids love it:

  • Huge open grass areas to run, roll, and play
  • A playground nearby for when they need structure
  • Watching boats, birds, and waves

Why it’s a nature win:
Even though it’s in the heart of Long Beach, it introduces kids to coastal ecosystems, ocean air, and the rhythm of the water, something that’s surprisingly grounding.

🌼 Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden

This one feels like a hidden gem, and it’s completely free with a reservation.

It’s not your typical “run wild” park, but it offers something just as valuable: a calm, sensory-rich nature experience.

Why kids love it:

  • Koi fish (yes, they will want to watch them forever)
  • Little bridges, winding paths, and peaceful water features
  • A totally different environment that sparks curiosity

Why it’s special:
This is where you go when you want to slow your kids down. It teaches observation, patience, and appreciation for beauty in a way that playgrounds just can’t.

💡 Tip: Great for quieter days or one-on-one time with your child.

🌳 Bixby Park & Bluff

This is where nature meets community, and it’s one of the easiest, most accessible outdoor spots for moms.

Set on a bluff overlooking the ocean, this park gives you the best of both worlds: playground + nature.

Why kids love it:

  • Playground + grassy space = endless options
  • Room to run, climb, and explore
  • Easy access to the beach path below

Why moms keep coming back:

  • You can meet friends, bring snacks, and stay awhile
  • Ocean views + fresh air = instant mood boost
  • There’s always something happening, from yoga to casual playdates (Visit Long Beach)

🦋 Rancho Los Alamitos

If your kids love animals and a little bit of history mixed into their outdoor time, this spot is a must.

This historic ranch is surprisingly kid-friendly, with open space, gardens, and even animals to visit.

Why kids love it:

  • Chickens, goats, and wide-open areas to wander
  • Paths and gardens that feel like a mini adventure
  • Space to explore without overstimulation

Why it’s a nature win:
It blends nature with learning—without feeling like a “lesson.” Kids get exposure to gardens, animals, and outdoor environments in a really approachable way.

💡 Bonus: Free entry and free parking make it an easy yes. (Visit Long Beach)

🌾 Colorado Lagoon

This is one of the most underrated nature spots in Long Beach.

It’s calm, peaceful, and perfect for younger kids who want to explore water without the intensity of the ocean.

Why kids love it:

  • Shallow water for safe splashing
  • Sand, birds, and space to roam
  • A more relaxed environment than the beach

Why moms love it:

  • It feels manageable (especially with toddlers)
  • Easy to keep an eye on everyone
  • A great intro to nature + water play

🌴 The Long Beach Bike Path (Beach Trail)

Sometimes the best nature experiences aren’t one destination; they’re a stretch of freedom.

This long, scenic path along the beach is perfect for walking, scootering, biking, or just letting your kids move.

Why kids love it:

  • Endless space to ride bikes and scooters
  • Sand, ocean, and people-watching
  • Stops along the way to explore

You don’t need a big plan, a packed itinerary, or a paid experience to give your kids something meaningful.

Sometimes, the best days look like:

  • Letting them get a little dirty
  • Saying yes to one more loop around the trail
  • Sitting on a bench while they explore
  • Not rushing home

Long Beach makes that kind of motherhood easier with nature spots that are beautiful, accessible, and free.

And the best part? They won’t remember how much you spent. They’ll remember how it felt.
