Remain Calm In The Chaos
Dear Long Beach Moms,
It’s a pleasure to write to you as we begin another school year together. This year, my goal for The Precious Perspective is to empower moms with meaningful insights drawn from my experience as an educational leader and my unique perspective from within the inner workings of educational institutions.
As a fellow mom, my house is undergoing a little makeover this 2025-26 school year, just as yours will be. There’s something so special and loving about the way we prepare ourselves and our homes to make getting our children out of the house and back to school as seamless and stressless as possible. You’re sorting through your children’s clothes, shoes, backpacks, and supplies to determine last year’s items that need to transition to the donation box while preparing your back-to-school shopping list.
Meanwhile, the school is planning for our bundle of joy to show up on day one. Simultaneously, our children are excited to start the new year, anxious to see friendly faces, and nervous about what unknown experiences this moment in their lives will present. Wallow in the variation of emotions with them! Moms, you may have escalated anxiety about this transition. Some of us will be handing over a toddler for the first time. Others are more experienced, with returning students. Does it ever get easier? One positive to recognize is that the school systems with a communicative style frontload us with all the details we can imagine.
However, this would be the time when that coined phrase “helicopter mom” is so warranted; the first day of school. If you’re anything like me, it’s the first week of school.
Feel valued in your efforts to ensure that, before you trust educational professionals with your babies, you’ve vetted every iota of decisions implemented on behalf of your child.
After the first week’s apprehensions cease, then shift your attention to encouraging your young learners to explore the creative opportunities available to them this year. For moms of high school students, I can’t stress the importance of working with the counseling department to ensure that your high schoolers access the LB Promise, which gives them an opportunity to take classes at the community college at no cost.
We are modeling individuals who will soon determine their virtues and the importance of the representation of personal character. So together, let’s nurture our children to be the best learners that they can be and to have an incredible 2025-26 school year.
Don’t forget to reward yourselves for all your work. After a successful completion of day one, moms, you deserve a session of mat Pilates and a delicious iced coffee, followed by an evening of slow, relaxing music, and conclude the night with a glass of wine. This is how you remain calm in the chaos.
Marvel in Motherhood!
Sincerely,
Precious Young
